About Sch’ eyk Housing Society

Mission

Sch' eyk Housing Society creates community founded on justice, love and kindness by providing housing for people in the DTES
experiencing poverty and marginalization.

Vision

A neighbourhood where every person’s worth is celebrated, and all people thrive.

Sch' eyk Housing Society is a not-for-profit, registered charity that oversees 236 units of independent, low end of market and rent geared to income housing units in Vancouver. Sch’ eyk currently owns and manages 3 of its own buildings and provides property management services for an additional 2 buildings. Learn more about Sch’ eyk’s properties.

The Society was first formed in 1982 as First United Church Social Housing Society (FUCSHS). In December 2022, FUCSHS parted ways with the United Church of Canada and became an affiliate  of the  Lu'ma Group of Companies and renamed Sch’ eyk Housing Society, which translates to “rising sun”. The shift of governance under Lu’ma enables the Society to improve the overall experiences for residents and make vital upgrades to the buildings by increasing its access to resources and building its internal organizational capacity.

Board of Directors

Sch’ eyk Housing Society is governed and guided by a volunteer Board of Directors, indigenous to Turtle Island. Together, they bring over 300 years of combined experience to the organization and Lu’ma Native Housing Society.

Staff

The dedicated staff at Sch’ eyk Housing Society continue to be the same staff that were operating our buildings prior to the transition to the Lu’ma Group of Companies. The staff strive to improve the lives of Sch’ eyk tenants through compassion, love and respect.

Sch’ eyk is committed to providing adaptable support programs to facilitate successful tenancies.

Current program offerings are:

  • Our senior residents have access to a variety of programs, including planning for end-of-life, senior abuse prevention, vaccination clinics, and aging-in-place resources. Our Tenant Resource Teams at Jennie Pentland Place and Bill Hennessy Place are dedicated to connecting seniors with programs and services.

  • Ensuring access to nutritious food is a priority. Residents of Jennie Pentland Place and Bill Hennessy have access to a weekly food market program at Jennie Pentland. They can also participate in community gardening initiatives.

  • Programming to be determined.

  • We often bring essential services directly to residents, ensuring easy access to health resources and wellness activities. In the past, we have provided access to hearing tests, influenza clinics, mobility device support, assistance with tax returns, and help in obtaining identification.

  • Our Tenant Resource Workers are available to help residents navigate various government resources, ensuring they receive the support and services they need.

  • We welcome donors who wish to provide gifts or hampers, which we distribute during the holiday season. We also accept toys for our resident children for Secret Santa.
